Split, the capital of Dalmatia and Croatia’s second largest city, is one of the gems of the Adriatic because it’s a 1,700 year old “living monument”. Built circa 305AD by the Roman Emperor Diocletian as his harbor-front retirement home, the Palace of Diocletian was turned into a refugee city almost overnight more than 300 years later when the barbarian Avars finally conquered the Roman capital of Dalmatia, Salona, just 5km distant. Astonishingly, the refugee population felt so protected with the walls of the Palace that they never built houses outside them for more than 1000 years! The result is a wondrous tapestry of Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and architecture right up to the present day all working together to create a stunning tableau. Even today, almost 3,000 people still live within the Palace walls - walls so well fortified that they were never breached by any invader. In 1979, UNESCO declared the Palace and the historic core a World Heritage Site. Our guided tour will take you to all of the highpoints of the Palace - the colonnaded Peristyle, the Golden and Silver Gates, the Cathedral (originally Diocletian’s mausoleum, but converted to a Cathedral), the completely intact Temple of Jupiter as well as other fascinating sights. Following our visit to the old city, you will have some leisure time to enjoy the magic of Split. You can stroll around the narrow alleys yourself for some intriguing shopping (filigree jewellery, clothing and shoes!) or visit some excellent museums.

We then leave Roman Split and take a speedboat to Trogir, stopping along the way at Kastela, a necklace of seven coastal villages, each protected by 14th - 16thC castles. We'll visit the handsome 15thC Kastel Luksic, built right on sea rock, and its fascinating museum. Then it's on to Trogir, whose soul began Greek in the 3rdC BC, but whose life is celebrated around the world for its breathtaking assemblage of Gothic, Romanesque and Venetian architecture. Situated on its own tiny island, connected to the mainland by a single tiny bridge on one side and to the island of Ciovo on the other, Trogir is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its many treasures include the Cathedral of St. Lawrence with its breath-taking portal, carved in 1240; the City Loggia built in the 15th century; the Palace of the Cipiko family; the Town Hall and finally the Benedictine Abbey from 1064 which houses a relief of the Greek god Kairos that dates back to the 1C BC. Before our guided walking tour we’ll have a fabulous peka lunch at the top-rated restaurant in Trogir, Konoba Idro. You’ll have a choice of beef or fish which is slow cooked over a wooden fire for many hours to release its unique Dalmatian flavour. Delicious peka bread and wine is included.
